Reporting & Writing

Red for Ed
Red for Ed was the first major news story I wrote as a journalist. My previous story had fallen through, so we decided to cover the Red for Ed movement within our school—with only a week before production. At this time, the Red for Ed movement has done a recent march down in Indianapolis standing up for educator rights. I think that my writing could have been smoother, but I also think that's something that comes with experience. Although it was done on very short notice, I got a lot of appreciative remarks from teachers, and it felt good knowing I made an impact, even if only a small one.

Celebrating in times of COVID

This story was an interesting one to write because it was done completely virtually my junior year. It was difficult to find people to interview, so I decided to send out a student poll and, based on those responses, I chose people to interview. This ended up really working in our favor, and I think the feature turned out pretty nicely. It was still relevant in relation to COVID, but had a holiday spin on it which helped make it less monotonous with typical COVID-19 coverage.
Queen's Gambit Review
I really loved writing this review. I had written reviews previously, but I was really excited about this one. When I watched the show, I found that there was a lot I could talk about, and I wanted to focus on some of the intricacies of the mini series. I loved how the show focused on mental health and complex interpersonal relationships making it one of my favorites to watch and review.

Clearing the COVID Fog

This was the first column I wrote for Inklings. I wanted it to be relevant to students and COVID-19 without telling students that they should get vaccinated. At the time, students and teachers alike were struggling with people not reacclimating to being in-person. I wasn't sure how it would be received, but I was pleasantly surprised when I had some many people come up to me and express how they felt the same way.
Latin for Life
Prior to working on Veritas et Scientia for the Indiana Junior Classical League state organization, I designed and was editor for, the Crown Point High School Latin Club newsletter Tempus Canis. I worked on a variety of stories and design work for this publication throughout my junior year, but I think what really stuck out to me was this story. It was really fun to interview someone who used to be on Inklings and was part of the IJCL like me. I felt like I really related to her, and this story really paid tribute to her time in IJCL.

Best of the Classics
In my second issue of Veritas et Scientia, I was asked to write a story promoting the IJCL State Convention. I knew at the time that it was technically an advertisement for state, but I didn't want it to feel that way when reading it. Instead of just listing all the fun things you could do at states, which granted there are a lot, I chose to describe my own experiences. I think that worked out better and made it more interesting to read.
