Passions to Profits

Passions to Profits was one of my first major design projects. Although it isn't one of my most elegant designs, I think that in comparison to some of my later designs it really shows growth and how far I've come as a designer. The side by my completely my own design, and, although it took me probably hours to do, I think it was interesting design-wise and informative.

Giving Back

Giving Back was one of the first spreads I did an a co-editor-in-chief. I hadn't done a whole lot of design before, and especially news design, so I struggled some with making this spread more "magazine-ish" rather than newspaper style. I do think it turned out well, but it definitely was more a newspaper design instead of being a magazine-style spread.

The Flavor of the Holidays

After my first issue as a co-editor-in-chief, I really wanted to expand my design skills and make better, more dynamic design. The flavor of the Holidays was an A&E spread I worked on for a long time. The concept was simple, but conveying the information in a way that was aesthetically pleasing and not entirely "christmas-y" was a fun challenge. In the end, I spent a lot of time looking up ideas on the internet and settled on a three column page and a major dominant photo. I feel like this turned out really cool, and I loved doing the typography. The only thing is that I wish I had some more, and better, photos, but, as is, I think it turned out really well.

Under Construction

As I continue to work on designs, I feel like they keep getting better and better. Even comparing designs from our first issue to our second, I can just see how much I have improved in that short of time. That really translates into how this spread turned out. Under Construction was a really tricky one when considering how many different content areas we wanted to cover and not make it feel too crowded. The "Coming Soon" infographic took a while to get just right and finding all the information was a little difficult, but, with some tweaking, I think it conveyed what we wanted it to in an easy to read, clean style.

A & E Review Spread

Moving from a newspaper format to a newsmagazine posed its own set of challenges including learn to design within such a small space. Last year was our first year working with this format and it definitely still felt like a newspaper, but we wanted to make it really feel like a magazine this year. I spent a lot of time working on making the design cohesive and not feel too cramped. We wanted to keep our content but translate it into a more reader friendly format. I personally created the "Playing Favorite" and "We're so over" element titles, and I think it really helped to make the whole issue more cohesive.

Rebuild and Renew (Veritas et Scientia)

The hard part about being both a state editor and a co-editor-in-chief is that although some things intersect, there are some major differences. Mainly, my newsletter is usually only about 13 pages and needs to be a more simplistic look. With my background in design from being on Inklings, I was able to redesign Veritas et Scientia in a way that was had better quality design, but I was limited in what I was able to do because I was using Lucidpress as my primary creation program. I think that, in the end, It ended up looking really clean and unique with its two-page spread style.

Release of Issue 1 of Veritas et Scientia

Prior to working on Veritas, I had not previously made any kind of Instagram post because I had not been in charge of any social media accounts, but for the release of the first issue of Veritas I was able to make a release post on our Instagram giving a little sneak peak into how it ended up working out. The design is very simple, but I think it effectively conveys the same sleek style I tried to create within the newsletter.
